Dota 2 isn’t known for its crossover events, but Valve has decided to team up with Capcom to bring Monster Hunter to the game. While Curios Quartero ended a few days ago on November 5, players are eager for something new. With no Diretide graced us this year (and apparently no Frostivus either), the Monster Hunter crossover was certainly unexpected but welcome.

In the past, we’ve seen very small crossover events in Dota 2. We’ve seen mostly broadcaster packages that pay homage to other games and popular media, such as Portal or Rick and Morty. Now, a new event is starting, giving players comics, skins, and couriers as well. When logging in, players will be faced with the Dota 2 x Monster Hunter information screen.

After that, players are treated to a comic featuring Ax and Goodkind, his trusty scribe. The comic documents a crossover between Dota 2 and Monster Hunter, with Ax documenting his own kills while Goodkind tries to determine the scope of each hero. This leads to the Hero Atlas crossover, which tracks progress and displays lore.

The event itself presents six sets of Monster Hunter themed cosmetics for certain Dota 2 heroes. However, each set also has 3 additional versions or colors. To craft this set in the game, players must play the game, harvest materials, and complete hero hunts. These are all just Monster Hunter references, and players only need to play the Dota 2 game to get the material.

The first thing players can do after participating in this event is create a Palico Courier. However, there is another new pet, Poogie. These so-called “Effigy Pets” will never leave your base, hanging around near your Effigy and following you everywhere when you return to the safety of your fountain. When the enemy attacks, Poogie flees to safety. There are six variations of Poogie, as well as several colors for the Palico Courier.

As with any event, the most important aspect is of course the hero cosmetics. Monster Hunter is known for having some amazing sets to build, and some of them are now coming to Dota 2. Dragon Knight (of course), Windranger, Techies, Anti-Mage, Beast Master, and Sniper receive these new sets. As mentioned previously, each set has a core, as well as 3 different color variations for players to plant.

Cosmetic Persona Anti-Mage, Wei, gets a fantastic version of the MH Kirin Armor set. Even with a reference to Robot Unicorn Attack for the “Prismatic” color.

Of course Dragon Knight must be featured in the Dota 2 and Monster Hunter crossover event. And yes, he turns into a Rathalos because of his Dragon Form.

Players can also decide to spend a little money, if they wish, to earn even more. The Expedition Pack will come with a number of materials, Poogie, and the aforementioned Rathalos Form for DK. Purchasing the expedition package will unlock the following:

The Dota 2 and Monster Hunter crossover event was an interesting but welcome event. However, even if we go another year without Diretide, we can only hope that this event does not take Frostivus away from us. With more than a month until the possible start of Dota 2’s holiday events, we’re patiently hoping that Valve still holds at least one annual event.

Still, this new collaboration is a fantastic show that Dota 2 can collaborate with the most unlikely sources to create epic cosmetics (and hopefully some events). For now, it’s time to farm so we can all unlock the “Unicorn Rainbow” color Anti-Witch Kirin Armor.
