Buffies, Mega Pig, RNG system, Map Creator and more

After a long delay, Brawl Star back with his lover”Time to Explain” podcast, where players and content creators from the community can ask any questions about the game and the developers will answer them. They have now released a new one, following September 2024 onecovering topics like Buffies, and more.

We’ve highlighted key points from this podcast to help you understand what you can expect in the future and game developer insights on the current state of gaming, and more.

Addressing Buffies and their long-term costs

The developers explained that Buffies was never designed in isolation, and they also shared some graphs to show the increase in playtime, retention, and low churn rate as well. This gave them confidence that Buffies was bringing the game back to life and they acknowledged that it acted as a chase item, something Gears couldn’t do despite being more balanced and cheap.

They also emphasize that pricing is not just done randomly but that they plan it with the next three years in mind. The goal is to bring more Buffies in the future along with new features and events. Mega Pig’s future and club involvement

According to them, Mega Pig was introduced to fix low Club League engagement by making rewards more accessible to casual players. While this system was successful, the team also admitted that the novelty had worn off and the rewards didn’t feel unique, especially with the new Sushi, Chaos Drops, and more.

They also clarified that Club League rewards are spread across Starr Drops, rather than just removing them. This does inflate the economy for casual players, although it doesn’t have much of an impact on the progress of us hardcore players. Honestly, even though the prizes aren’t available in one place, they’re still pretty cool.

The record was not achieved as the team had hoped

It was great to see the team admit that Records wasn’t doing well and that they weren’t even as happy about it as we the fans were. Their internal data revealed that Records failed to increase playtime and retention as they had hoped, and underperformed like the Masteries it replaced.

The problem is that Masteries only targets dedicated players who continue playing without thinking about leaving the game. And, Records also followed a similar path, while locking rewards behind an equally less than stellar system. The good thing is that the team is working on a new approach.

Claw Machine relies on RNG and plans to make improvements

So, when they tried to remove all random rewards in 2022, there was a serious drop in player retention that almost ended the game. And this is very understandable because they bring a surprise factor, even though most of them are of the same value as normal gifts. This is why they even added it to the Claw Machine.

That said, they also agree that the machine is currently too random, which is why they revealed plans for a lucky draw mechanic during the podcast. It’s 2026 and the Map Creator rework is still uncertain

Unfortunately, although they had had a good discussion about Map Maker, they had not yet found a design that they felt was worth committing to completely. While still very popular, the team believes that it has more potential than before. They just don’t think it’s the right time to take big risks, but rework is bound to happen.

Why voice chat is still a sensitive topic in Brawl Stars

I love the voice chat feature in the games I play, and I want it in Brawl Stars too. But that doesn’t apply to the team. They’ve discussed it internally many times, but serious security concerns are holding them back. To keep the game safe, they needed to add a variety of new systems, and not just a simple voice chat function.
