Michael CombsThat indie developer behind relaxing puzzle game, diamond, has accused miHoYo (HoYoverse) copied the game and turned it into a mini-game in popular 3D action game, Zenless Zero Zone. This sparked heated discussions on social media about originality, game mechanics, and more.
The similarities between Ouros and Ether Tuning have sparked debate
So, according to Mr Kamm, Ouros launches in 2024 on Android, iOS and PC, while Zenless Zone Zero introduced a similar mini-game called Ether Tuning last June. And because HoYoverse is “admittedly, the studio is worth billions of dollars,” Mr. Kamm claims many ZZZ fans now”assuming that their version is the original, and mine is a clone” causing all the negative reactions online.
In addition to stating the obvious, Mr. Kamm also pointed out several features in the video he shared on Honestly, while games can naturally share ideas, I can now understand why ZZZ fans accused Ouros of being a clone, when so many details go hand in hand.
Talking about Ouros, it is a relaxing puzzle game where you need to form flowing curves and guide a ball past targets in a mathematical space. Additionally, the game includes over 120 handcrafted puzzles, which I found fun to solve, as the game has very positive reviews on Steam and decent downloads on the Play Store, even as an underrated premium title.
Fans questioned Ouros’ originality with Primo comparisons following the allegations
What I find even funnier is how some fans dismiss Kamm’s accusations by claiming that his puzzle game, Ouros, is itself a copy of another title, Firstwhich was released one year earlier than his. And in response, Mr. Kamm clarified that Primo allegedly resembled “version of the original game jam I made for this game, Splines ‘n Shapes,” which he created in October 2020.
At the time this article was written, miHoYo had yet to provide a public response, and while I personally believe that game mechanics should not be patented, I still feel miHoYo is wrong on this because the similarities are too much, especially when most of Kamm’s custom design choices also appear in the mini-game. That said, you can try Ouros via the Google Play Store or App Store, if you want to support the dev.
