XD Inc. has announcedofficially ICEY 2the sequel to its beloved 2D side-scrolling action title, with the Steam version planned for release between April and May 2027 and the mobile version expected to arrive in China around 2028. Producer Mark Shaw also confirmed that the game’s crowdfunding campaign will begin on October 1, 2026.
ICEY 2 builds on everything fans love while expanding its scale and story
So, ICEY 2 serves as the official follow-up to the original action title that became popular for its fast-paced combat and fourth-wall-breaking narrative. While the development team currently consists of only around eight members, the sequel is shaping up to be a much more ambitious project, with a larger world, deeper gameplay systems, and a stronger focus on storytelling.
Now, one of the biggest changes is the return of the game’s iconic narrator, which has now evolved into a dual narrator system. According to the producer, the map is also roughly three times larger than the original game, and you’ll experience different map layouts depending on the choices you make throughout the story. So, I feel each playthrough will be more dynamic.
New Mask System, strategic combat, and more bosses headline the sequel
Moreover, combat has also received a major overhaul. I mean, heavy attacks have been removed in favor of a new parry mechanic, while the permanent shield has been replaced with a shield that activates through skills. But I’m mainly looking forward to the new Mask System. With this, you can equip separate masks on the left and right side, each granting unique buffs for attacks or skills.
On top of that, the sequel promises more boss encounters, with entirely different bosses appearing in the first and second playthroughs to keep repeat runs fresh. And the story picks up directly after the events of the original game, introducing themes such as AI, the Old Net, and weirdcore-inspired elements while gradually answering the mysteries left unresolved in the first title.
Overall, every detail revealed so far makes ICEY 2 look like a worthy successor, even though we are yet to get proper gameplay footage from the team. That said, mobile gamers have to wait a lot, since the mobile release is currently planned for a 2028 launch in China first. However, the release schedule can still change, so stay tuned for more details.
