Conversion of any photo into a Dynamic 3-D scene-Blog Stereoscopy

Recent iOS 26 updates have brought new features to the iPhone photo application that allows almost all photos to be converted into ‘spatial scenes’, which are described as dynamic three-dimensional images.

AI -powered features ‘turn on’ any photo, including those captured spatially or as mono images. It works by separating the front and background in the image using the resulting depth map automatically, and can be used with the iPhone 12 model and so on. As you expected, some images work better than others, and they recommend having a clear subject, but it is still interesting to have almost ‘visible glass’ on your iPhone without having to pay the fee for each conversion.

I have tried some photos, and, so far, it has found that most of the images captured by spatial seem to work better than Mono, maybe most of it because of composition, but sometimes there are some extraordinary (especially the cats). After being converted, you tilted the iPhone from side to side or up and down to get a fairly subtle three -dimensional effect (in the video below, I move a little too fast, but when you tilted it, there is a delayed response because the three -dimensional image subject moves toward the slope). As with stereoscopic photography, some scenes work better than others, and as usual with AI, sometimes can struggle with a front background that is confused with the background, but at least this is a pleasant start.

Macrumors enjoy that this feature can be used with an iPhone lock screen wallpaper, and I fully agree with them. See below for the tutorial.

Step by step guide using ‘spatial scene’

1. To make a ‘spatial scene’ of any photo:

• Update to iOS 26 (this should be possible with the iPhone 12 model and so on).
• Open your ‘photo’ application.
• Open a suitable image.
• Click a small icon near the upper right to select ‘spatial scene’
• Tilt your cellphone to see three -dimensional images.

Ironically, if you try to use stereoscopic side by side images, you must use only half, or turn it into a ‘spatial’ photo, which can be done using the i3dsteroid application. Using a compatible application version, just open a stereoscopic photo, and save it as a spatial photo (lower storage option).

If you want to create a stereoscopic image side by side of the ‘spatial scene’ image that is converted, you can carefully take screenshots from ‘spatial scenes’ when you tilting your phone to the side to the side, and then using the i3dsteroid application to make a stereo couple from Screen Shot.

Please note in the video below, I hold the phone in a portrait orientation, but this will also work in the landscape.

2. To set the ‘spatial scene’ on your lock screen:

Then, good:

• Open your photo, click image.
• Press Share (lower left).
• Click ‘Use as a wallpaper’.
• Click on the hexagon shape on the right to produce spatial scenes.
• If you are happy with the image, click ‘Add’ (top right).
• You can now also ‘set a pair of wallpaper’ to set a suitable background.

Or:

• Go to ‘setting’ then ‘wallpaper’.
• Click ‘Add New Wallpaper’.
• Click ‘Photo’.
• Here, you can scroll the top list to the ‘spatial scene’ to see what has been selected by the phone, or click on the photo on your roll camera below to select one.
• Click the hexagon shape to the right of the screen to convert to the spatial scene.
• If you are happy with wallpaper, click ‘Add’ (top right).
• You can now also ‘set a pair of wallpaper’ to set a suitable background.

You can also do the steps above from the lock screen itself by pressing and holding to add, edit or switch between various wallpapers and widgets.

I will be interested in hearing other people’s opinions about this new feature, if that is something you will use regularly outside ‘that looks cool’, and also see whether Apple has a plan to do anything other than wallpaper with this feature.
